This December, in collaboration with the Impressionist & Modern Art Department, Christie’s Design is pleased to present Designs by Alberto and Diego Giacometti in New York. This selection of over 10 lots represents iconic and celebrated designs by the brothers Alberto and Diego Giacometti.
An important collection within the auction is the Property from the estate of Jerry Ganz, San Francisco, California. This private collection encompasses designs by both artists, undertaken in the 1970s and meticulously acquired by Jerry Ganz in the 1990s. The collector pursued numerous works by the Giacometti brothers, being drawn to the functional materiality of the sculptural designs that lived harmoniously alongside important 20th century fine art, such as Fernando Botero’s monumental sculpture Man on Horse, and Sam Francis’ abstract expressionist wonder Untitled from 1980.
Showcased amongst the collection are prized designs by Diego Giacometti who drew inspiration from the antiquity and the natural world, such as the rare ‘Table aux Caryatides’, ‘Fauteuils ‘Tête de Lionne’’, and the iconic ‘Chat Maître d’hôtel’.
Additional highlights from the sale include a spectacular ‘Pair of ‘Carcasse’ Andirons by Diego Giacometti from the former collection of Baronne Françoise de Pfyffer or iconic ‘Tête de Femme’ (Figure) Floor Lamps by Alberto Giacometti. The artistic combination of form and function is wonderfully displayed in the spectacular ‘Console aux deux oiseaux et coupelle’, circa 1970 and the ‘Berceau’ Table, Seconde Version.
